TGIF (17): Buy or Borrow

TGIF at GReads is a feature by the fabulous Ginger, who asks us a fun question to answer every week. It's always a joy to be a part of this, and I think everyone certainly should try it out!

Where do your books that you read come from? The bookstore? The library? Do you prefer to own a book, or have it on loan?

I'm going to answer this question in two parts.

Where I Get My Books

Most of the time, I either get my (physical) books from bookstores (Barnes and Noble is the most accessible, but I do love Books of Wonder).  I do, however, get eBooks via Amazon, Smashwords and NetGalley.  My family, friends and boyfriend are also very generous when it comes to giving me books.

Owning versus Borrowing

I don't mind borrowing books from the library or friends, mostly because I don't need to pay to do either thing.  But, and this may just be a personal thing, I do prefer owning my own books! I've been building my library since I was 9 or 10 and, at last count, there were about 3000 books in there already.  It is my dream to have a library in my home where my kids, other relatives and friends can peruse and borrow and read to their heart's content!

  1. I gave away some of my childhood favorite books - to friends who "borrowed" and never returned, to a "communal library" - my biggest regret. Many of them are out of print now :'( - but someday I hope to have a library stocked with my favorite books

  2. I'm so sad that I didn't keep any of my books from growing up ... I have one book of goodnight stories from when I was little and a Sweet Valley Saga book and that's it! 3,000 books is crazy ... I thought having close to 700 was a high number! I'm envious. :)

  4. I don't buy eBooks myself but what with the storage constraint, I probably should do so. My social circle are always generous with books- mainly because I have few other interests and they're an easy gift if needs demand.

That's a lovely idea- to have a library set up by yourself. It'd be almost like a memory room too- since you'd see books and associate a memory with them.

Good luck sorting books during you vacation time! I'd like to say I will too, but I know it's unlikely. I'm going away, I'll have essays to do and I'll feel lazy being off. But I'm on top of it as of this weekend so I'm not too worried about it getting out of hand. I tend to have stop off points in the house that books go through until I pass them on. But I don't want to any more, I want to copy your library idea!

  5. One day you can come and visit my library... when I've fixed everything and put it in order ;)

  6. I'm so glad your feelings have changed! Here's to building our personal libraries!

  7. Ooh, do you have the ones with the hardback covers with the yellow spine? Those are the ones my MOM owned :)

  8. At least you're practical enough to know that it's better to borrow than own books in your situation. I moved recently (and will be moving again soon) but I can't seem to stop myself from book shopping...

  9. Ooh, you did too? I collected all the BSC books and their spin-offs (while my sisters only collected Karen, haha). I loved BSC!

  10. I think that's admirable - that you read only printed books! I was the same way for a long time. Then I got a Kindle for Christmas and.. well, the rest is history. I do prefer printed to ebooks though.

  11. Liz - Thank you so much! I was so honored to be featured on Ginger's blog because she's one of my blogging inspirations :) And I hope you had a successful book shopping day at the sale!

  12. My mom was the type of person who let me keep my books. My rewards and gifts and shopping trips when I was growing up always involved books in some form or fashion... so I've managed to amass quite a collection :)

  13. Here's to hoping! I'm sure you can find all of your favorites one day :)

  15. There's just something about being surrounded by physical books that makes me so happy. So so happy.

  16. Holy crap Alexa!!!!!! 3000 books!??!!??!!? Is it normal to be drooling after reading that? I think that is an AWESOME goal for you and I am confident you will have a full-scale library one day. I do need to start using my library more often though!

  17. I love building up my personal library. It's the reason why I usually buy my books and why I prefer books over ebooks. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  18. Holy bajeezles! That's a lot of books. I've only been building my library since last June when I started my blog. Before, I just thought it was completely pointless to own a book if I'd already read it. Don't worry, those are no longer my feelings :P

  19. I'm exactly the same with owning books. I can't wait to have an awesome home library.

I always wanted to have my own personal library too! Now that I actually have the space, I may have to start building my collection. I have a huge collection of Nancy Drew books that I hope my two daughters will enjoy when they are older. 3000 books is a pretty amazing collection! Thanks for sharing and for stopping by my blog!

  21. I love that you have a massive personal library! That was always my dream, too, to have thousands of books to use and to share with others. Moving around a lot has cut down on my stash, though. :-)

  22. Hey, there, Alexa!

Thanks for commenting on my TGIF post! I'm returning the favor, plus I'm now a new follower of your beautiful blog!

I think that most book lovers really do prefer to own their books. I stopped going to the library because it was just so frustrating... I wanted to own every single book I read, so I decided I'd just look them up in a bookstore, or online!

And I only read REAL, printed books. To me, there's nothing quite like holding a physical book in my hands, and turning the pages, instead of endlessly scrolling on a screeen!

    Happy Friday!1 : )

  23. Hi, thanks for visiting my blog. I still have some of the books I had as a kid but wish I'd never got rid of all the Enid Blyton books. I just don't have space for more books so adore my kindle.

  25. Wow, 3000 books is impressive! That is quite the collection! I would love to build up to that. I am hitting up a library book sale tomorrow, where everything is going for under a dollar, so I am hoping to find some gems there.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, I really enjoyed reading about you on GReads the other day, so it was great to hear from you!

I'm so jealous of your personal library! When I was growing up, I would get so many books and then my parents would make me trade them in at 2nd hand bookstores to get more. I'm a little bitter about my Baby-Sitters Club books. I had the WHOLE SERIES. They're being re-released, so I'm collecting them again, but still.
