Because Facial Hair Can Be a Lead-in to the Best Medicine: Macky Reads Mustaches for Maddie

Mustaches for Maddie book review
File this one under INTENSE expectations and heavy breathing that were all for naught. I totally misread this book (thanks to my no blurb reading policy) and assumed it would be a terrible tragedy. I mean, it’s a story about a young girl who discovers she has a brain tumor. Most of the contemporary books (in any genre) that I’ve read always have to do with some kind of terminal illness, so imagine me reading through the first few lovely chapters of this beautiful book freaking the hell out.

No spoilers, of course, but I was totally expecting terrible terrible things to happen. And they do. Sort of. But not the way I was expecting.

Overall, this was a short, beautiful read. It’s a story about friendship, and laughter, and real life, and oddly enough, insight into how anyone (kids and adults alike) can be introspective and look deeper inside (and beneath other people) to understand things better.

Based on a true story and a real person, this book is about Maddie and her love for mustaches, her close-knit family, and her valiant effort to brave the realms of surgery and healing. It made for a heartwarming experience that I will treasure.

Here's my takeaway from this one. Real life happens. Sometimes even before you even know what real life means. But then all it takes is a good look inside and around you to see that you aren’t the only one going through it. And that the best thing to do outside of the battles you have to fight alone is to have people to come “home” to.

Mustaches for Maddie comes out October 3, 2017, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is twelve, was twelve, has twelve year old kids or younger. The world would be a much better place if it were filled with people like Maddie. Best we can do is tell her story and hope the “mustaches” catch on.
