Feast of San Gennaro

A couple of years ago, my best friends & I accidentally came across the festivities for the Feast of San Gennaro, an annual celebration in Little Italy. Mesmerized by the lights, sounds and smells of the street fair (which reminded us all so much of our hometown Bacolod and our annual festival, Masskara), we joined the crowd.

It was really fun to wander from booth to booth, looking at all the merchandise on sale and sampling as much of the food as we could. We wound up enticed to go and have a sit down dinner at one of the restaurants, gorging ourselves on delicious bread, pasta and pizza. It was such a fun night, and we enjoyed ourselves tremendously.

Flash forward to just this last weekend! Jaymee, her boyfriend Ephy & I decided to venture out together to partake in the Feast of San Gennaro celebration this year. Instead of arriving at night, we went into the early afternoon. The streets were crowded with booths selling merchandise, stalls with various treats (Cannolis! Pizza! Pasta! Gelato! Mozzarepas! Lemonade! Drinks!) and so very many people.

It was fun to casually wander around and take everything in! We wound up buying a few different things to eat, as well as making a very happy-making purchase of some original Beanie Babies. (That’s a story for another day, by the way, our newfound obsession with hunting them down.)

The Feast of San Gennaro is a fun celebration with a distinctly Italian flavor! If you live in or near NYC and want a chance to visit, the festivities are until this Sunday, September 21. You can find more info on their site.

  1. Lovely review, Alexa! It's been SO long since I've read a more "literary" book or historical fiction for that matter, and this will definitely be the first I pick up when I decide to to re-immerse myself. I've heard wonderful things about this book from everyone, so I hope to get to it eventually. Glad you enjoyed it so much!

Anyway. I've seen so many of you girls raving about this one that I'm really excited to check it out! I used to read a lot of historical fiction but haven't as much recently so it's definitely something I want to get back to! The characters sound so intriguing too -- I need to get my hands on this one!
