It Takes Two || January 2013

One of my favorite things in the world is teaming up with other bloggers, and it is my pleasure to present to you a project that Cass and I have been planning since the start of the month. It Takes Two is a feature inspired by our desire to push our genre/subject matter boundaries and try something different every month! We'll be picking a genre for the month, and then choosing two books to read from that genre - one well-known title, and one not-so-well-known title - and review on our blogs.

This month, it was my turn to choose what genre/subject matter we would be reading - and I picked fairytale retellings/books that incorporate fairytales! I grew up loving fairytales, and it's been such fun to see how authors have taken traditional fairytales and incorporated them into new stories.

The books we picked out for this month are:

Check back later in the month for our reviews!

(Obviously, the feature name is inspired by a few things - the fact that there are two of us doing it, and that we'll be reading two books a month - but we'd both like to attribute the real inspiration to that movie from our childhood. If you have no idea what movie we're referring to, *gasp*, I suggest clicking right here.)

Do you want read to with us?

February's chosen genre/subject matter is historical fiction and we will be reading Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys and Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly. If enough people are interested, we'll provide a linky for everyone to be able to link their reviews!

  1. Love the sound of this meme! Reading outside of your usual genre/subject boundaries is definitely something we should do every now and then because you never know, you might just be surprised and don't you just love that when that happens? Happy reading :)

  2. This sounds like such a great idea, ladies!! And what great books to start with! If you didn't know already that Tiger Lily was basically my favorite book that I read last year, well...I just told you. :-) But i can't wait to see what you think of The Book of a Thousand Days. It's one of the only Shannon Hale books I haven't read yet, and I love her to bits. Enjoy!!

  7. OMG! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Book of a Thousand Days!!! It was soooo wonderful! I read it before I started keeping a blog, so I should re-read it and join you! Shannon Hale is so wonderful and I think this book is one of her lesser-known gems. I really hope you like it!

(And Revolution is on my to-read list, so I'll have to join in on that one too!)

  8. Tiger Lily was a really interesting read, even if the tone was sadder than I'd anticipated. And I will be interested in your thoughts on the other!

Also, excited for you to read Revolution next month! I love Jennifer Donnelly's books.

Fun feature by the way - I love stuff like this and really looking forward to seeing what books you end up reading throughout the year!

    1. Tiger Lily seriously broke my heart when I read it. I'm done, but I haven't even attempted to write my review for it.

And thanks! We're hoping it catches on and that it inspires others to read out of their comfort zones :)
