Top Ten Tuesday: I Shall Read You This Year

As always, this feature is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish
For this particular list, I wanted to choose books that I've always meant to read, but haven't quite gotten around to for one reason or another. Without further ado, here are some books that I think I must read in 2013.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Persuasion by Jane Austen
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
The Giver by Lois Lowry
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

These are all pretty hefty reads, so we'll see how it actually works out. Hopefully, I cross some, if not all of them off of my list this year!

35 Comments:

  1. Persuasion is on my list, too! I love Jane Austen's books. (: The Giver is great. Les Mis is good, although at 1200 (I think it's about that), it could have been trimmed down in my opinion. (The 1st 100 pages are description of a character who doesn't return for the rest of the book...)

I hope you get to all these books and have a Happy New Year! (:

    1. I'm sincerely hoping I get to them as well! It's a hefty set of books, but I'm quite determined at this point :)

  2. This is certainly a heavy list! I'd love to read some of the classics, but I am awful at getting myself into them. I love The Giver, I read it in grade 6 for school and it is one that has always stuck with me through the years.

    1. Lucky! I wish The Giver had been required reading for me. Since it wasn't, I'm just going to have to "require" myself to read it!

  3. I have to read all of these as well. I just don't feel like reading classics all that much. I haven't read 1 yet thought, so I'll have to brave them soon.

    1. It's funny because I actually find that I enjoy classics. I just have to be in the right mood for them. For some reason, a lot of them cropped up while I was making this list, so there you have it :)

  4. Awesome list, Alexa! Lord of the Flies, American Gods, and Jane Eyre are on my list, too -- I neeeed to read them! Good luck with your list! I read The Giver a while back and really liked it. :)

    1. Apparently, it's a "classics" year for me, or a "required reading" one. I hope I get to finish some of these!

  5. Sounds great! Although I would save yourself some time and skip Rebecca. I had to read it when I was in high school, and that was such a drag! (Although now that I am older and wiser, maybe I'll give it a second chance.) And I would start Les Mis and do like 100 pages a month or something that books is EPIC.

The Giver is a super quick one! You can knock that out on a rainy day.

    1. I actually have The Giver in my Kindle library, so no more excuses! And I'll keep that in mind about Rebecca :)

  6. Eeek!!! Out of my top five FAVORITE BOOKS OF ALL TIME, you have three of them on your list! No joke!

Jane Eyre is my absolute favorite classic. If you like gothic, mystery, romance, and gender equality, then you'll love it!

Ender's Game is one of my all time favorite sci-fi books (and it seems to be on everyone's list this year because of the upcoming movie. I think the characterization of Ender is so brilliant. I never felt such sympathy for a character and wanted to help him! (Plus the Battle Game is awesome. Like Quidditch, you wish it really existed!)

And I have this theory that there's all this dystopian lit right now because the authors who are writing it grew up on The Giver. I feel like The Giver is kind of the "Father of Current YA Dystopian."

I'll be watching for your reviews of these books. I really, really hope you enjoy them!

  7. I really, really hope you love The Knife of Never Letting Go. Chaos Walking is such a great series and I envy the talent of Patrick Ness. You have some great reading ahead of you!

    Happy New Year, Alexa!

  12. I've read and loved Jane Eyre and Rebecca is a book that builds up slowly and grows on you. Apart from that, good luck to you! I've almost abandoned classics which is not good at all.

  13. I think you are going to love Ender's game. It's one of my favourite books. You start reading and you can't put it down :)

I have Persuasion in my list too. I haven't read many books by Jane Austen :(

  14. I read Lord of the Flies way back in high school. A lot of people hate it but imo, it's really necessary to understand power dynamics. I don't know if you watched LOST, but a lot of themes are from LotF.

    Happy New Year!

  15. I can't speak highly enough about Lord of the Flies or American Gods. They are both SO amazing and some of my favourite books of all time. I love how most of these are "oldies but goodies." They certainly don't get enough credit these days!

  17. Girl, you have some AWESOME books on this list! First of all, I adore all things Jane Austen and Persuasion is absolutely Austen at her best. I love Pride & Prejudice, but I think Persuasion might be my favorite. I don't know... depends on my mood :)

Jane Eyre and Rebecca are also wonderful! They're two of my favorite classics. Gothic, dark, and kind of brooding but both totally suck you in the story. Can't wait to read your thoughts on them both!

I read The Knife of Never Letting Go recently after Lisa and Asheley kept going on and on about it, and I totally get why they loved it. It's very different from anything I've read before, but it was great. I'm actually reading book two, The Ask and the Answer, right now.

Les Miserables was also on my list for this year. I bought it last year and intended to read it right away, but I just kept putting it off. After seeing the movie, I finally had the energy to start reading it. I just started and have made myself a reading schedule so that I can do it all in 10 weeks (which is only about 120 pages per week). I'm only 100 pages in, but I LOVE it so far. Hope you really do get to read it!

  18. Oh! I tweeted you about this!!
I decided I wanted to read a few classics this year but I haven't listed them out. (I don't do well with lists.) I've tried twice to start Anna Karenina (so I can watch the movie) but I have such trouble with the Russian names and also Leo Tolstoy, um, rambles. A lot. So last night I downloaded the audiobook via my library's Overdrive system (33 hours long, oh my!) and before I knew it, I'd listened to more than an hour just while I was working in the kitchen. I think I can reach my goal of some of the chunky classics/world literature if I use audio with them.

Anyway, my favorites from your list are American Gods (I'm doing a very slow re-read of that one now. I love that book SO MUCH. If you want to discuss, let me know!), The Knife of Never Letting Go (just re-read that one too!), and The Name of the Wind (love love love love love). I hope you love the mess out of them all, every single one on that list. It's a great list and a great goal. :)
