Tunes & Tales 2.0 | March 2018

Back in the day, Tunes and Tales was a series I enjoyed featuring some of my favorite albums alongside books each song reminded me of, but it ultimately ended up having an expiration date as I don't fall head over heels in love with a lot of albums in their entirety (though I will have posts coming up for my three favorite albums of 2017, which I'm excited about!). Anyway, I've decided to tackle this feature in a slightly different way going forward. I'll be sharing my five songs on repeat for each month, each paired with a relevant read, and including a link to my monthly playlist on Spotify (as I'm constantly adding to it up until the very last day). Happy reading and listening, friends!

Song: Make Me Feel by Janelle Monáe
Book: Be with Me by Jennifer L. Armentrout (writing as J. Lynn)
Lyrics: "Baby, don't make me spell it out for you/All of the feelings that I've got for you/Can't be explained, but I can try for you/Yeah, baby, don't make me spell it out for you/You keep on asking me the same questions (why?)/And second guessing all my intentions"

Alexa's Thoughts: There is so much push-and-pull, will-they-won't-they tension going on in Be With Me! I suppose it's understandable since both Teresa and Jase have their own baggage to bring into their budding romance, as well as the additional pressure of not knowing how Teresa's sister and Jase's best friend Cam will react. The moment I heard this song again after reading this one, I just knew they'd be a perfect match.

Song: Alien by Sabrina Carpenter and Jonas Blue
Book: In Pieces by Danielle Pearl
Lyrics: "This feeling's so alien/Need to know if you're just a friend/Are you a secret I'm holdin' in?/So leave it on my brain if you feel the same/Lie but I notice it/Don't know the rules but I got to win/The paranoia is sinkin' in/So leave it on my brain if you feel the same/Ooh, let me discover all of your colors/If you love me let me know"

Alexa's Thoughts: If you're in search of yet another push-and-pull type romance, as well as another story where the brother's best friend falls in love with the little sister, well, In Pieces is one I'd recommend checking out. (I'd personally recommend reading all of the books in this series before this one, just so you'll know some of the secondary characters in it better!). But anyway, once I heard the lyrics of this song, I just knew it would pair well with this story.

Song: Rollercoaster by Bleachers
Book: The Secret Science of Magic by Melissa Keil
Lyrics: "Now I'm running and I can't stop anywhere I go/I think about it everyday and night I can't let go/Man, I'm never the same/We were shotgun lovers, I was shotgun running away/So, come a little closer/There was something I could tell ya/You were such a rollercoaster/And a killer queen you are"

Alexa's Thoughts: I had to feature a song off of the Love, Simon OST because 1) the OST is killer and 2) the movie was wonderful and you'd best go see it. Ahem. Anyway, this song just sounds the way I felt while I was reading The Secret Science of Magic. Much like the previous two novels I'd read of Keil's, this story was full of quirky characters and featured a story on the quieter side of the spectrum but still one that felt really relatable in certain aspects.

Song: Found/Tonight by Ben Platt & Lin-Manuel Miranda
Book: Okay by Danielle Pearl
Lyrics: "Well, let that lonely feeling wash away/All we see is light/'Cause maybe there's a reason to believe you'll be okay/For forever/'Cause when you don't feel strong enough to stand/You can reach, reach out your hand"

Alexa's Thoughts: Honestly, if you know anything about the plot of Okay (if you don't, please avoid looking at it and check out the one for Normal instead since that's the sequel), then this song pairing is self-explanatory. Let's just say that main character Rory is dealing with a lot of stuff, and she's slowly learning that there are people in her life who truly care and will be there for her no matter what.

Song: Us by James Bay
Book: Dirty Rowdy Thing by Christina Lauren
Lyrics: "After the wreckage, after the dust/I still hear the howling, I still feel the rush/Over the riots, above all the noise/Through all the worry, I still hear your voice/So, tell me how to be in this world/Tell me how to breathe in and feel no hurt/Tell me how 'cause I believe in something/I believe in us"

Alexa's Thoughts: The first time I ever heard this song (it was this spectacular acoustic version), it made me cry. There was something so raw, so honest, so true about these lyrics, and it especially resonated with me because of my current emotional and mental state. I also immediately knew it fit the romance that springs up between Harlowe and Finn in this story, just because these two care so damn much about each other even as they're trying to figure out their own problems.
