Choose Your (Life) Story • The Hidden Oracle

I'm still baffled as to why I waited over a year to read The Hidden Oracle. I had the book pre-ordered the moment I first heard about it and it's by one of my all-time favorite authors, so I really had no excuse whatsoever not to read it right when I got it. Yet somehow, I still managed to wait over a year (if you can't tell, I'm not over this little fact) before I dove into another Riordan novel.

The Hidden Oracle is the first novel in Rick Riordan's series, The Trials of Apollo. Apollo has been kicked out of Olympus and turned human, punishment for the mistakes he's made. He teams up (read: becomes servant to) a street smart orphan named Meg, ventures to Camp Half Blood, and goes on a series of adventures that lead to him facing his very first 'trial' that has life-or-death consequences. It's one heck of an adventure, jam-packed with lots of action and surprises, that's for sure.

Spoiler alert for the rest of this review: I loved The Hidden Oracle.

I loved that we're treated yet again to Riordan's particular brand of twisting Greek & Roman mythology into a modern-day setting. I loved the humor, which was as tongue-in-cheek and silly as always. (Side note: The ridiculous haiku chapter headers were ridiculously silly-slash-awesome.) I loved the new characters a whole lot, particularly Meg, who instantly charmed me, and Apollo (known as Lester in this story), who had to win me over (which he did). I loved the reappearance of familiar faces, allusions to past stories and so many connections. I loved the way the plot still managed to surprise me, even while possessing the typical set-up I recognize from Riordan's other series.

I basically enjoyed the heck out of The Hidden Oracle, in case you couldn't tell. While it definitely took me a while to warm up to Apollo himself (which is where I docked this one half a star), I still wound up loving it by the time I reached the end. Riordan does it again - blending humor, adventure and mythology into a story that is effortlessly entertaining. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next one!

This was my seventh read for The Picky Pledge Reading Challenge! Apart from reading at least one TBR book a month, Hannah & I are also answering questions related to the month's category.

1) How long has this book on your TBR? It's been on my TBR since it came out last May! So, give or take a few days, I've had it on my TBR for 14 months, meep.

2) What other books have you read by this author? I've read his entire Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, the entire Kane Chronicles trilogy, the entire Heroes of Olympus series and the first novel in his Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series.

3) Do you have any other books by this author on your TBR? I haven't acquired my copies of them just yet, but I do plan on reading the second novel of The Trials of Apollo series and the second novel in the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series.
