After losing her child, Ginger Dysart was lost in grief. But since moving to Thunder Point, a small town on the Oregon coast, and with the help of her cousin Ray Anne, Ginger is finally moving forward. Her job at the flower shop is peaceful and fulfilling, and she's excited to start her first big assignment, assisting with the Lacoumette wedding.

In spite of her lasting heartache, Ginger finds herself swept up in the pleasure of the occasion. But the beauty of the Lacoumette farm and the joy of the gregarious family are ruined by an unfortunate encounter with the bride's brother, Matt. Struggling with painful memories of his own recent divorce, Matt makes a drunken spectacle of himself and Ginger when he tries to make a pass at her, forcing Ginger to flee the scene in embarrassment.

But when Matt shows up at the flower shop determined to make amends, what started out as a humiliating first meeting blossoms into something much deeper than either of them expected. Discovering they have a lot in common, they form a solid friendship, though everyone around them worries that Ginger will end up with a broken heart yet again. But if Ginger has the courage to embrace the future, and if Matt can finally learn to let go of the past, there may still be hope for a happy ending.

Reading a Thunder Point novel always feels like a homecoming. Every story I’ve had the pleasure of reading so far always immerses me deeply into this little community, reuniting me with old friends and introducing me to new folk to love. A New Hope is certainly no exception to this phenomenon. Not only do I get to see what became of some of my old favorites (Seth, Iris, Peyton, Scott, Grace, Cooper and more), but I also got to meet Ginger and Matt and watch their own little love story unfurl.

Their relationship, and how it unfolds, is very sweet. Both have been burned by past relationships; both are heartbroken souls so wounded that they think shying away from the possibility of love is the best course of action. It is quite satisfying to see how they both slowly open up to one another, hesitant yet hopeful that this could be a good thing; it is even better to watch them wrestle with the demons of their past, occasionally making a mistake or two, in order to find their way to the good future together they so deserve. Even if it felt slightly predictable, it was still lovely to read about the ups and downs of their romance.

But I honestly wouldn’t have been so attentive to their romance had I not developed a fondness for Ginger and Matt as individuals. Ginger is heartbroken over the loss of her son, reeling from the effects of an unhealthy relationship; Matt has had his ideals shattered when it comes to marriage. Yet both are trying, in their own way, to move on, to make new lives for themselves – even before they stumble across each other. I enjoyed getting to see the smart, thoughtful side of Matt, and the strong, friendly side of Ginger, and I definitely think they’re great additions to the Thunder Point clan. (And speaking of that clan, I just love that, as always, the secondary characters get a nod or a mention. Carr integrates multiple story arcs and characters so well into each novel.)

All in all, A New Hope is certainly a charming addition to this series.

(P.S. On a random note, this cover is slightly misleading because it doesn't really fit any particular scene in the book. Just my personal opinion, of course.)

I never had a name for it before, but "boredom browsing" perfectly describes that awful (and wonderful!) phenomenon! If I'm bored and there's any type of electronic device within a ten foot radius of me, you can bet that I'm looking at books. Not only is this dangerous for my TBR, but it's also detrimental to my wallet! Anyways, best of luck with your next quarter of reading! :)

  2. I just want to say again but I so love following your updates with this. I'm not quite together enough right now to keep track of it for myself (and I have too many things I MUST read for work at the moment) but I love the idea and definitely have been using it to keep my buying in check if nothing else. (I kind of went overboard with review requests recently though. Oops.)

  3. Oh I love this, Alexa! My cousin and I have a two person book club and we just take turns picking the next book for the other. It's different from this but it certainly helps hold us accountable as we give each other lists for library ordering.

And spot on about holding back at the library too! Working at one, it's way easy for me to go overboard and check out or order tons of books for myself. I used to be reallllly bad about this. At one point last summer I remember I had about 30 books checked out!! Very bad. Now my absolute max is 6 and I usually keep it under.

I loved this cute little post! <3

  4. OH MAN BOREDOM BROWSING - what a great thing to identify. I'm so bad at that!

  5. I think boredom browsing can also be kind of related to my random bookstore visits- I've tried to limit those as of recent because I always get tempted to buy a book just because I'd feel bad if I walk out of a bookstore empty handed. So now I only visit if I have a certain book in mind I really want to buy. It helps me avoid acquiring books I'm not really gonna read ASAP.

  6. Yessssss. I have that bad habit too! I can't go into a bookstore and just browse, because I always wind up wanting to buy something and feeling guilty if I don't! I think your method is a great way of handling it and avoiding impulse buys.

  7. I AM TOO. I can't help it though! The lure of a new book or pretty cover or compelling synopsis is pretty damn strong.

  8. Oh, I love that you guys have a mini book club! I think that's awesome; I wish my family members or long-time friends read more and we could do this. And yes, the library is a weakness for me. I've been better at it in the last few months, but prior to that, I had 20+ checked out at a time, even though I couldn't get to them all!

  9. I'm so glad you're enjoying the updates, Emma! I think it's great that it's inspiring you to be more selective in your book buying. (And don't worry - I'm guilty of the review request thing too!)

  10. I can't take the credit for that term - it all goes to Hannah! It's a very dangerous pastime, even though it's a lot of fun too. And thank you, Holly!
