Screens & Scenes: A Devil, The Lost Princess, and Little Bamboo

Ever since Macky and I established movie night Sundays, I've been watching more films than ever before. Here are a few that we watched recently, including one that I've seen many times (and I'm sure many of you have as well)!

Horns movie poster

WHAT: Horns (trailer)
WHO: Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, Max Minghella
WHY: I think Daniel is a genuinely good actor. Plus, Macky & I were both really curious!
LOVE: Daniel Radcliffe (though he needs to work on that accent) / the tree house in the woods / they mystery behind Merrin's death
LIKE: the symbolism of the horns that Ig develops / good versus evil versus gray
LOATHE: all of the gore / the lewd moments
RECOMMENDED FOR: Daniel Radcliffe fans, fans of gore and mysteries, offbeat film fans
WOULD I SEE IT AGAIN? Nope, nope, nope.

Anastasia movie poster

WHAT: Anastasia (trailer)
WHO: Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Bernadette Peters, Angela Lansbury
WHY: Hello childhood favorite! I was seriously obsessed with the Romanov story.
LOVE: the setting / the song numbers / the romance / the Romanov story
LIKE: the animation / Pooka as deux ex machina
LOATHE: Rasputin, for obvious reasons, but also because he lacks a back story
RECOMMENDED FOR: animated film fans, Romanov enthusiasts, musical junkies
WOULD I SEE IT AGAIN? I watched it for the billionth time already, so obviously, yes.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya movie poster

WHAT: The Tale of Princess Kaguya (trailer)
WHO: Aki Asakura, Kengo Kora, Takeo Chii, Nobuko Miyamoto (Japanese) // Chloe Grace Moretz, Darren Criss, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen (English dub)
WHY: I've always been fascinated by Japanese culture, especially their folktales and myths. Plus, the animation looked stunning!
LOVE: the animation / Kaguya / Kaguya's mom / Kaguya's attendant / Sutemaru / the depiction of nature
LIKE: the plot / the transitions
LOATHE: the way this made me cry by the end
RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of Studio Ghibli & Japanese animation, fans of Japanese culture & folktales, those who enjoy whimsical heartbreaking tales
WOULD I SEE IT AGAIN? For sure! The animation was incredible.

  3. I am ashamed that I still have not seen The Tale of Princess Kaguya! I'm hoping the IFC Center will have another Ghibli marathon soon so I can catch it during that!

  4. Oh man, Dimitri...the cause of young girls' fluttering hearts all over the world. When he showed up on that buzzed article about hot cartoon characters, I was like, yesss. And I loved all of Ana's outfits (from orphan coat to blue dress to yellow ball gown)...obviously I cared about the important parts of that movie.

I need to watch Princess Kaguya since I love Miyazaki movies & folk tales in general. Oh, and we can't forget ol' Daniel. Only he could pull off horns. Great recs, Alexa :)
