Screens & Scenes: Agents, Amour & Anecdotes

Back for another round! This time, I'll be tackling a few films I've watched recently. They're from a variety of movie categories, so I'm fairly confident you'll find at least one you're interested in checking out.

Kingsman movie poster

WHAT: Kingsman: The Secret Service (trailer)
WHO: Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, Taron Egerton, Sophie Cookson
WHY: Spies! I like spy movies. Also, I really like Colin Firth.
LOVE: Colin Firth (no brainer, really) as a spy / Taron Egerton / cool gadgets / impossible feats and fighting scenes / secret lairs
LIKE: Valentine + his second Gazelle / plot twist reveal / Eggsy's back story
LOATHE: a scene at the end that was written in well, but felt unnecessary in terms of plot progression
RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of spy + subterfuge films, people who don't mind a little gore, foul language and crass displays, Colin Firth fans
WOULD I SEE IT AGAIN? Maybe, but only for Colin, Taron and the spy stuff.
The Last 5 Years movie poster

WHAT: The Last Five Years (trailer)
WHO: Jeremy Jordan, Anna Kendrick
WHY: I've loved the musical for ages, and the way it depicts love.
LOVE: Jeremy Jordan / Anna Kendrick / the unexpectedly funny moments / the emotions / Jason Robert Brown cameo
LIKE: having my emotions pulled at and pushed at and broken
LOATHE: the transitions between songs and scenes
RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of the musical, fans of non-linear storytelling
WOULD I SEE IT AGAIN? Maybe, but only if my feels could handle it.

Saving Mr. Banks movie poster
WHAT: Saving Mr. Banks (trailer)
WHO: Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks, Colin Farrell
WHY: Any Disney film is usually on my radar. Plus, I wanted to know this "behind the scenes" tale!
LOVE: Emma Thompson as PL Travers / Tom Hanks as Walt Disney / the message behind the movie (and that it wasn't preachy at all) / seeing what the production of Mary Poppins was like / the non-linear storytelling
LIKE: the musical moments (but I wanted more of them) / the humor
LOATHE: the way I bawled like a baby as the film reached the climactic moment
RECOMMENDED FOR: Disney fans (particularly Mary Poppins), fans of stories that show what goes on behind the scenes
WOULD I SEE IT AGAIN? Yes, actually. I want to watch it knowing how it ends.

I loved Kingsman - but that scene at the end (and I have a feeling we're thinking of the same scene) took me out of it a bit. They could have cut it and the movie would have been just the same.

The Last Five Years is going on me LEAH, WATCH THIS NOW! list. I'm a fan of Jason Robert Brown (yay cameo!) and I do love musical-inspired movies!

  2. Oh, I do like Mary Poppins and I'm a huge fan of Tom Hanks. The other two movies don't really appeal to me, lol.

Saving Mr. Banks-aaaaahhh! Emma Thompson is a Queen! She's so impeccable in her command of the character! Also, would like to check out The Last Five Years.
