Once Upon A Time...

I have always loved a good fairy tale! When I was a wee child, I was fascinated by the princesses and their magical adventures. I grew up obsessed with the Disney-fied version of fairy tales, watching the films and learning the songs and basic stories by heart. And then, one day when I was older, stumbled across a collection of Grimm's Fairy Tales with the grittier, scarier, actual fairy tales - and was still obsessed. There's something utterly magical (literally and figuratively) about immersing yourself in a story where all sorts of fantastical things can happen, where there are heroes and heroines, where there are daring adventures and magical curses and clever solutions. My obsession with fairy tales has stayed with me, and so, I'm very excited that Hannah & I will be chatting about them today.

What is your favorite fairy tale?

This might come as a surprise to a few people, but I have always been obsessed with The Little Mermaid. I'm not overly fond of the Disney version (though I consider it one of my films since it came out the year I was born). But as I said in this post, The Little Mermaid is a fascinating character. She makes daring choices, and loves deeply, and I've always thought that admirable.

What is your favorite Disney version of a fairy tale?

Ask me a tough one, would you? It's going to be fairly predictable to hear that I'm deeply in love with the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast. Basically, it's because the story is compelling, magical and funny. Plus, I identify deeply with Belle! Here's a longer explanation about my love for Beauty and the Beast too, in case you were interested.

What is your favorite fairy tale retelling?

I'm massively obsessed with Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles. Taking inspiration from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel & Snow White, it's seriously one of the most unique and fun retellings I've ever come across. Her characters are so memorable, and the plot is delightfully twisted. If you've yet to begin read this series.... You probably should. (my reviews: Cinder / Scarlet / Cress)

  2. I think your Friends with ARC question is really interesting actually. It's fun to stop for a while and think about the stuff we didn't get to do. I'm not a big fan of science, being more drawn towards the liberal arts, but I've always wanted to learn some hard physics. I think through it you can learn and understand most of the mysteries of the Universe that have already been uncovered, and it allows plenty of room to theorize and imagine possibilities, like the fifth dimension and all that crazy stuff.

  5. We have a similar love: Beauty and the beast, just look at my avatar and blog design :D This has always been my favorite fairytale and I still can't get enough of it. It's one of the movies I watch at least three times every year, haha. I'm also obsessed with the Lunar Chronicles. Other retellings I adore are Cruel beauty and Tiger Lily <3 and of course Throne of glass! A bit inspired by Cinderella.
