We're On Each Other's Team (+ Giveaway)

We've talked about villains already, and today we're tackling another character type that appears in books: the sidekick. Sidekicks are the people readers will recognize as being a great source of support and encouragement for the hero/heroine. They might be gruff and tough, or they might be gentle and kind, or they might be sarcastic and prickly, or they might just make you laugh all the time. But sidekicks are essential for most fantastical journeys, as it's usually impossible to go it alone. In case you haven't guessed, Hannah & I are sharing our favorite sidekicks today, whether from fantasies or other genres!

Who is your favorite sidekick?

While Carswell Thorne (The Lunar Chronicles) and Nikolai Sturmhond (Grisha Trilogy) were two names that popped into mind immediately, there's one guy I have always admired: Kenji Kishimoto. He's tough as nails, smart and sarcastic, but underneath, he's got a surprising vulnerability and a loyal heart. (first appearance: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi)

Who do you want as your sidekick?

There is only one right answer to this question, at least for me. I want Rowan Whitethorn to be on my team, all day, any day, every day. Rowan is a seriously tough guy, a seasoned warrior who bears his own scars. He seems like the type of guy who could push me to my limits, and past them, but only so that he could be pushing me forward. I'd have faith in him to take care of me for sure! (first appearance: Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas)

Taylor Swift = Lilah Montgomery (to me)

Which sidekick do you think you could possibly be?

This might make y'all laugh, but it's true: I would probably be most like Lilah Montgomery. While she's got no special abilities or magical powers, she's a great friend. She's a powerhouse musician and performer, but it's her kindness, her empathy, her loyalty, her sense of humor that makes her such a wonderful person. (first appearance: Open Road Summer by Emery Lord)

  3. I didn't know if I was supposed to leave a comment on both blogs, so copying the comment I left on Hannah's here:
Oh I'm so excited for this giveaway!!!!! I have been dying to get my hands on a copy of Heir of Fire since I finished Crown of Midnight. I haven't read much fantasy, but I've grown to love the genre over the past few months. For right now though I'd have to say Nehemia is my favorite and that whole story line was quite frustrating (trying to be vague to avoid spoilers!).

  4. I love Jamie from the Mara Dyer trilogy. He's funny and supportive, and brutally honest with Mara when she really needs it- especially since most people are scared of her.

  5. My favorite sidekick is Samwise Gamgee in Lord of the Rings. He's the quintessential partner and protective best friend.

  6. My favorite sidekick is Jean Tannen from The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. If you haven't read it, you really should because it is an amazing novel!

  7. I would hate to really think of Hermione as a "sidekick" to Harry Potter, but I really do love how she uses her brains to get out of tough situations.

  8. I think Bex is an awesome sidekick to Cammie in the Gallagher Girls series. Bex knows Cammie better than the girl knows herself, she's always backing her up, encouraging her and doing what needs to be done even if Cammie doesn't ask for help. That's a great sidekick to have!

  9. Christina from Divergent is great, too!

  10. Jean Tannen totally has my heart! I'm always excited when other people have read this series. I like Locke and Sabetha is my Queen, but damn, Jean is the absolute BEST!

  11. I'm tempted to say Jean Tannen is my favorite, because, well, he is the best, but I'll try to be original. I don't know that she counts, as it is a contemporary novel, but I really love Reagan in Fangirl. She's tough and no-nonsense, and she really cared. I think she's also a lot like me. I'm just not QUITE as awesome.

  12. omg you practically read my mind! My fave sidekick is Rowan and I would forever want his beautiful fae-self to be right by me as I take on Adarlan with badass skills!!! :)

  13. Who do I want as my side kick? I think it would definitely have to be Johanna Mason from The Hunger Games because she is sly, perceptive, sarcastic, gutsy, aggressive, and vicious. She would be the yin to my yang. I think the two of us would make an awesome team! Thank you for this amazing giveaway! :)

  14. FINNICK O'DAIR!!!! He's the bees knees and quite handy with a trident.

  15. Ahhh I LOVE Lilah!!! I would love her as a sidekick, but then again I'd totally probably be just like her too, haha. Great post!

  16. My favorite sidekick is probably Nanny Ogg..Thanks for the giveaway!

  17. YES I totally see Lilah Montgomery as Taylor Swift! I'd probably want Emily from Since You've Been Gone as a sidekick since she seems really cool.

  18. I think I'd pick Celaena from Throne of Glass to be my sidekick. She's such a badass, she would definitely have my back.

  19. I'd pick the Igor from Claire Legrand's "Year of Shadows" to be my sidekick. Who doesn't want a talking cat? ^^ Thanks for the giveaway!

  20. My favorite Sidekick has to be WATSON. He and Sherlock balance each other so well. Goodness, I need to obtain these books so I'll force myself to read them!

  21. Finnick from Catching Fire. He's awesome AND has fabulous hair!

    ReplyDelete
  22. My favorite sidekick would probably make *me* the sidekick. But I'd have to go with Jean Tannen from The Gentleman Bastard series.

  23. You nailed it! My all time favorite sidekick is Carswell Thorne from The Lunar Chronicles. He reminds me sooo much of Malcolm Reynolds of Firefly who I adore. I love his wit and sarcasm and oh his charm!

  24. Such a lovely post!! I totally love Thorne and think he would make an awesome sidekick. Chubs from The Darkest Mibds series would also be phenomenal!!

  25. Teleportation is the one I want too! I hate driving, plus I want to travel everywhere. Or empathy as that'd be super helpful in the work I do. That's the one I *kind of* already have.

  26. I'm in absolute agreement on Kenji and Rowan! I wouldn't have it any other way to be honest. However, I'm clueless to which sidekick I would be, haha. I love this Fall into Fantasy theme. :)

I love sidekicks in books! And I always want them to get their own book. Roar comes immediately to mind. And Roux from Also Known As. I usually like it when they're funny and charming. Something I wish would be done more often is for the sidekick to have his or her own side romance - even if it's not from their perspective, I love seeing them find love too. :)

I would want the power of invisibility! Perhaps that makes me creepy, but I think it would be cool to go anywhere undetected.
I would not want the ability to fly - I hate heights and I get motion sickness too easily. :P
My current superpower? Ummmmmm, speed reading? LOL

I started this a little while ago, and haven't yet gotten past the first two chapters. This has never really happened to me before, but something seemed.. off to me. But I definitely plan on picking it up again SOON. I hope, like you said, it will get better for me. Plus I want to meet this love interest! :) Lovely review, Alexa!
