TGIF (21): Required Reading

TGIF at GReads is a feature by the fabulous Ginger, who asks us a fun question to answer every week. It's always a joy to be a part of this, and I think everyone certainly should try it out!

Which book from your school days do you remember reading and enjoying? Is there a book published now that you'd like to see in today's curriculum for kids?

I remember having to read quite a few books for school when I was younger, and I really enjoyed reading them all. My top five favorite titles I remember having to read for school are Mr. Popper's Penguins, Where the Red Fern Grows, Hatchet, Sarah Plain and Tall & Romeo and Juliet.

As for books that I'd like to see included on a school curriculum, I'd love to have kids required to read It's Kind of a Funny Story, which I think deals with depression and the pressure teens face to achieve a certain number of things in a great way.

  1. I've always been kind of delicate... Haha. Where the Red Fern Grows broke my heart! I did really like Hatchet and Sarah Plain and Tall. I've yet to read Romeo and Juliet. I know, right? Crazy. Soon! Very soon. :) I have it in paperback and on my kindle, so I'm out of excuses. :)

  12. Seeing people list all of the books they had to read in school is reminding me of the books I had to read. I totally forgot that I had to read The Hatchet in middle school.

I haven't heard about any of these books, guess I have to find out more about them so to the Goodreads! :)

And you're right about HP and Hunger Games, if studied properly, there really is great lessons in both of them. Especially in Hunger Games!

  20. I actually read the original Shakespeare play when I was about 10. I fell in love with the writing style, plus it was my first brush with Shakespeare.
