Gift Guides for Marilyn & Angie | In Search of Us Blog Tour

I'm thrilled to be a part of the blog tour for In Search of Us! I've been excited to read this sophomore novel from Ava Dellaira since it was first announced, since I truly enjoyed her debut Letters to the Lost. Today, I'll be doing a gift guide for the two main characters -- I hope you get an idea of what they're like based on the gifts I've picked out.

1. Mix tape | Angie owns a Walkman she found in a thrift shop years ago. While it came with a mix tape of its own that she does listen to, I think she'd enjoy having a personalized tape made just for her.

2. Soccer ball keychain | Angie has great memories associated with soccer, mostly because she enjoys the sport and because it's how she met a boy that ended up being a very big part of her life.

3. Candle | Candles, particularly votive ones, would transport Angie back to instances in her childhood, and I'd like to think it would be very fond memories. She's a little older now, so picking out scents that one would think she'd enjoy would probably be preferable.

4. Cottonwood leaf necklace | There's a turning point in one of Angie's relationships that happens in a cottonwood, a big emotional one actually. It just seems like something that would be a great symbolic present.

5. Bubblegum ice cream | Angie's favorite ice cream flavor is sure to be a hit as a gift! It's often a celebratory treat that she and her mother indulge in during special occasions.

1. Rolls of film | One of Marilyn's passions in life is photography. It would definitely be a practical and thoughtful thing to get her rolls of film that she can use to indulge her hobby.

2. Hummingbird charm necklace | Anytime Marilyn sees a hummingbird, it would remind her of something that ties her to the past - a past she both adores and struggles with. It would be a symbolic gift for her (the equivalent of Angie's tree, really).

3. Mexican Coke | One of Marilyn's earliest memories with someone special to her was sharing a Mexican Coke. But not only would this bring back memories, it would also just be a really refreshing treat on a hot day in LA.

4. Denim overalls | As someone who adores going to the beach and is fond of casual clothing, I think Marilyn would definitely like getting some new overalls to use as a coverup. They provide great coverage too!

5. Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion | As a fan of Didion's work, and as something that she shared with the boy she loved, Marilyn would definitely love to own an edition of this particular work.

I hope this gift guide piques your interest in both main characters and the book! You'll have to wait until next week to grab a copy of your own (March 6!), but for now, check out a little more about it below.

In Search of Us by Ava Dellaira
Publisher: Farrar, Straus & Giroux (BYR)
Publication Date: March 6, 2018

The author of the beloved Love Letters to the Dead returns with a parallel story of a mother and daughter each at age seventeen. Marilyn's tale recounts the summer she fell in love and set out on her own path. Angie's story is about her search for her unknown father.

This sweeping multi-generational love story introduces readers to mother-and-daughter pair Marilyn and Angie. To seventeen-year-old Angie, who is mixed-race, Marilyn is her hardworking, devoted white single mother. But Marilyn was once young, too. When Marilyn was seventeen, she fell in love with Angie's father, James, who was African-American. But Angie's never met him, and Marilyn has always told her he died before she was born. When Angie discovers evidence of an uncle she's never met she starts to wonder: What if her dad is still alive, too? So she sets off on a journey to find him, hitching a ride to LA from her home in New Mexico with her ex-boyfriend, Sam. Along the way, she uncovers some hard truths about herself, her mother, and what truly happened to her father.

Hope you enjoyed this gift guide! I also hope that you'll pick up a copy of this book for yourself when it comes out (or borrow it from the library). Let me know if you end up enjoying it! Don't forget to check out the rest of the tour stops, and thank you for stopping by.
