Book Review: Archangel's Eternity by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Eternity

While I am not one of the fortunate folks who started reading the series when the first novel Angels' Blood originally released in 2009, I did end up reading through the first twelve books in the series in 2020 with my friend Rachel and falling head over heels in love with everything about it. The compelling lore, where author Nalini Singh weaves the fantastical into the mundane with ease. The engaging plots that weave through the series, whether simply being contained in a single novel or spreading out across multiple books. The wonderful characters that really are the heart of why I adore this series so much, and the emotional journeys, heartwarming bonds and easy distinctiveness that make them stand apart from the rest. The entire Guild Hunter series is easily one of the most well-written urban fantasy/paranormal romance series, in my opinion, and for me, it’s my absolute favorite of this subgenre.

Archangel’s Eternity feels like the end of an era. (I honestly still can’t believe it’s the last book of the series!) It bookends the series beautifully, in my opinion, with a story that focuses more on the lives of these beloved characters and the many changes that the passage of time has wrought on who they are and what their circumstances might be. I described it to a friend as feeling really “slice of life”, at least when compared to some of the more action-packed novels in the series… and I genuinely loved that, given all that we’ve witnessed our characters going through prior to this installment. The book offers answers to lingering questions, allows us precious moments with our beloved cast of characters (we genuinely get to see so many folks we adore to pieces, and that was perfection), and draws on the momentum and build-up of all the books that came before to tug at our heartstrings. It was an emotional roller coaster - I wept my way through a fair chunk of this book (for reasons both happy and sorrowful), but I did also laugh out loud at times and I also felt extremely seen at certain points (due to the way that certain events in this novel line up with things going on in my own life). But I loved the entire reading experience, and it was my absolute pleasure and honor to get to spend this last bit of time with this series I adore before coming to the end.

I’m grateful to Nalini Singh for writing such an epic, wonderful series. I’m grateful that I picked it up in 2020 and haven’t looked back since. I’m grateful that I’ve fallen further in love with the series with each new release since that year. And really, there’s not much more I can tell you about Archangel’s Eternity at this point except to reiterate that I loved it and to declare that yes, it’s absolutely a worthy ending to the series.
