This week's edition of features an animated superhero film that I thoroughly enjoyed, a movie adaptation of a very magical musical and the last installment of a funny franchise.
WHAT: Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (trailer)
WHO: Matt Lanter, Sumalee Montano, Jerry O'Connell, Jason O'Mara, Rosario Dawson, Christopher Gorham, Nathan Fillion, Shemar Moore, Sean Astin, Harry Lennix
WHY: I'm always down for a good superhero film. Though I'm partial to Marvel, I think the DC Universe can also be really fascinating.
LOVE: the Aquaman origin story / the dynamic between the members of the Justice League
LIKE: Atlantis / the technology / the budding romances
LOATHE: the bad guys / the predictability of the story (even as a newbie to it)
RECOMMENDED FOR: comic book fans, DC Universe fans, superhero fans, kids
WOULD I WATCH IT AGAIN? Maybe. But I'd probably want to turn my attention to other stories set in the DC Universe (and there are SO MANY)!
WHAT: Into the Woods (trailer)
WHO: Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp
WHY: I first encountered the musical in 2005, as we did an excerpt of it for a musical revue. That, plus the addition of some stellar members of the cast definitely made me want to see this!
LOVE: the creepy fairy tale feel, Meryl Streep as the Witch, James Corden as the Baker
LIKE: Jack and Little Red, most of the songs, Johnny Depp as the Wolf
LOATHE: the princes, the transitions
RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of Into the Woods the musical, Stephen Sondheim, fairytales (especially when told in an unusual, new way)
WOULD I WATCH IT AGAIN? Maybe. I definitely really liked some bits.
WHAT: Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (trailer)
WHO: Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Owen Wilson
WHY: I loved the first two movies! Plus, Robin Williams. You can never go wrong with his presence in a film, honestly.
LOVE: All the original cast, the "letting go" theme, Rebel Wilson, Robin Williams and his last few lines that made me sob, the British Museum setting, the relationships between the characters, the humor
LIKE: I honestly think I mostly loved this one, though the humor did veer off into personally icky territory at times.
LOATHE: I honestly can't say that I loathed anything.
RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of the franchise, children & families, those looking for a good laugh
WOULD I WATCH IT AGAIN? Yep. But this time, I'd bring the tissues.

I really like the first two Night at the Museums - plus I'm a total history buff, so I really liked that aspect of these movies! I think Into the Woods looks really interesting, but I've always been wary of musicals in the movie theater since Les Mis a couple of years ago.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading this book now and loving it! I'm really responding to the writing style too. Must hurry up and read to see how it all shakes out!

I'm curious about Into the woods. I've heard mixed things about it, but my fairytale loving heart has to see it of course :D The last movie from Night at the museum was bittersweet. I felt a little emotional about some things.
