Travel Tales: DMV (Guest Post by Jess)

Travel Tales is a celebration of these combined passions, and I’m hosting it this August together with my friends Magan & Estelle of Rather be Reading and Elena of Novel Sounds

As part of the Travel Tales event, I have a guest blogger traveling on over to my blog today - Jess from Books & Sensibility. I was very excited to invite Jess to participate in this Travel Tales event, as I love the blog that she and her sister run together. Their reviews are succinct and thoughtful, while their other features are well-written.

I'm very excited about the fact that Jess wrote about an area that I'm familiar with - the DMV, which consists of Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia. I was actually born in Washington DC, lived in Maryland till I was about five, then in Virginia till I was about eight; it's definitely a place where I feel a kinship. So without further ado, please welcome Jess to the blog!

If you ever find yourself driving I-95 North toward Washington, D.C you’ll come across an area known by locals as The DMV: the  D.C., Virginia and Maryland metro area.  A place I called home for many years.  While I don’t think I appreciated it when I lived there, as I’ve gotten older I realized what a unique and historic destination this area is.

In about a 45 minute drive, you can experience the best music, art and culture that two states and a district have to offer. I’ll give you the run down of these three destinations and a few books to take along.

The locals call it “The District,” and the one word most people associate with it is power. In The District, you can visit the home of President of the Unites States and watch national politics in action in the gallery at the Capitol. If the outdoors is more your style, check out the Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring or jog along the Potomac River.

If you enjoy waterfronts and urban escapes, destinations like the Baltimore Inner Harbor and The National Harbor are for you. You can enjoy fresh seafood, take a one day cruise or visit aquatic animals in their habitat at The National Aquarium.

Virginia is for lovers, and in the Dominion State, there is something for everyone. If you travel a little farther down south, you can see history in action at Colonial Williamsburg or you can relax and enjoy the sandy beaches of Virginia Beach. If you’re looking for a little more action, stop down in Richmond and kayak on the James River.

Thank you so much Jess for agreeing to be part of the Travel Tales event with this amazing guest post. It was fun to read about these three places that are so familiar to me, and the books that you've suggested sound great.

For more travel-themed posts and guest posts, be sure to check back on my blog, Rather be Reading & Novel Sounds! And I'm hosting a giveaway, so check that out too.
